It hardly needs saying that flowers are in their own right expressions of nature's greatest beauty. They are also highly symbolic of places, events, and conditions in the human experience. I have been photographing flowers for a very long time, at least since I was in college. I few years ago I did an entire exhibition – nearly 30 images – just of flowers. Last time I was in Italy I made many floral images, and this trip was no different. Here are a few of my favorites, again from the most recent shooting. Sometimes flowers are a subject all by themselves, others they offset some other object, and at other times they become a portal to the abstract.
