| It
was a wet morning in Greve in Chianti – too wet to be
out hiking with camera gear, so I set up in the window of
my hotel room and worked street scenes in the rain from the
shelter of the room. (There is much to be said for “old-fashioned”
hotels with opening windows.) Surrounding the central piazza
in Greve is an arcade, allowing pedestrians to move between
shops without getting wet, except for the need to cross open
space at the corners of the piazza. My room overlooked one
of these corners and I set up the camera on a tripod, preconceiving
combining shots of people crossing below me with various color
umbrellas. This image combines four of those shots. I also
did some in-camera multiple exposures, but this composite
created in Photoshop works better as I have greater control
over individual layer opacity and masking.
