Florence, Church of San Miniato

We spent several hours at the church of San Miniato overlooking Florence from above the Piazzale Michelangelo. Photography is not permitted in the main cemetery in back of the church, but this was not the case in a couple of smaller burial yards in front of San Miniato. This statue of a young girl in supplication drew my attention and I concentrated my remaining time on studies of the statue by herself as well as juxtaposed with other elements, including in this multiple exposure the roses at her feet and an Italian flag marking another grave at some distance.

The image to the right is one of the first I made when I first saw the group of statues marking a grave. I only had about 20 minutes to work this scene before the group was to depart and working rapidly, I did 17 studies (29 exposures counting the multiples). I wish I could have stayed longer and explored at greater length my vision for this so very intimate and poignant scene.
