Over the past two trips to Florence (2005 & 2007) I have
created numerous images juxtaposing the static with the ephemeral,
in most cases, solid buildings with the rush of people and
vehicles past them. On this afternoon, my friend, photographer
Darla Oathout, exercised great patience while I stood for
a long time in front of the Duomo, camera on tripod, shooting
many multiple exposures of people passing by and standing
before the great west doors of Santa Maria del Fiori. The
magnificent Duomo has stood in one place since construction
began in 1296, while we humans pass by in great numbers, transitory
as flowers, never staying very long, and in most cases never
returning. This is my favorite of the series shot that afternoon.
