The Nature Of Light

Pink Light

Pink Tears
Wichita, Kansas, 2004

Film capture, Nikon F5, 200mm f/4 micro

I could have just as easily assigned this image to either diffused or low-contrast light. The morning I shot this, the cactus was in full sun and I used a hand-held diffuser to control the contrast. Besides cheating on the light, I also cheated by using a hose-mounted mister to provide the water drops. Contrast is tonal contrast more than color contrast. Pink is a red color with strong dilution by all other colors, the fire of red muted by the influence of all others. Thus it becomes a comfortable color associated with softness and femininity.
