The day before I created this image there must have been some festivity at the beachside motel where I was beginning a week-long stay for there were rose petals strewn across the sand. The morning clouds had not lifted and I was up early to photograph. The splash of red color hither and yon across the beach attracted me, a juxtaposition that seemed to me nonsensical yet poignant. The overcast conditions provided the perfect low contrast light (a rarity on the beach) in which to shoot comparatively dark objects on the white sand
