Chiaroscuro is a term denoting bold contrast in illumination between dark and light. While properly applied to painted images, it can be borrowed by other visual media as well. Here, it was the contrast between the brightly lit portions of the sea and the departing storm clouds, the pier mostly in shadow, and the glistening roof on the building at its end.
