Cinque Terre comprises "Five Lands (or villages)" spread along a series of valleys in eighteen kilometers of sheer rocky coastline in northern Italy. The villages are built into the rocks between the beach and the hills. Though they are easily accessible by train, they are very difficult to reach by car, and foot trails connect the towns about 500 to 1,000 feet above the sea, alternating between the cliffs, olive groves and vineyards. Once fishing villages, they have become a prime vacation getaway due to their colorful character and welcoming beaches. |
