SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

John Ellert Photography

Tuff Formation

Nearly every camera-equipped tourist who visits James Bay comes home with a shot very similar to this one and its frequency in guide books bears out its popularity. Tuff is formed from the compressed ash from volcanic eruptions. Softer than the basaltic lava from which most of the islands are formed, tuff erodes into interesting shapes, as seen here.
