SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

John Ellert Photography

Out for a Stroll

Over time the giant tortoises have created vast networks of interlocking trails through the dense Scalesia forest on Santa Cruz. This individual shows the moss and lichen that frequently grows on the carapace of long-lived tortoises. Notice how much more worn the carapace on this individual compared to the young tortoise shown previously.
