SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

John Ellert Photography

Mangrove Lagoon

Mangrove lagoons are found in sheltered bays and inlets throughout the islands, forming an important littoral habitat for fish and birds, their branches and prop roots providing shelter. Their roots also serve to trap sediments and thus extend the island's shoreline. Black mangroves grow to 25m (80’) high.
