SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

John Ellert Photography

Leatherleaf

Floreana, Punta Cormorán

Leatherleaf
Maytenus octogona

Endemic species

200mm f/4 micro; Velvia 100F

A shrub-like evergreen, the leatherleaf is found in sandy coastal areas and is very resistant to the dry conditions typical of the littoral zone. The leaves are vertically oriented along the stem to reduce noon-time exposure to the intense equatorial sun.
