SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

Lava Lizard

Santiago, Puerto Egas

Lava Lizard, Microlophus albemarlensis

Length: 20 cm (8”)
endemic

200mm f/4 micro; Velvia 100F

Of the seven species of lava lizard, M albemarlensis is the most widely distributed, occurring on all the central and western islands. They are omnivorous, feeding mainly on insects, but including vegetation as well.
Ground-dwelling, their small size, habitat, and rapid movement make them difficult subjects to photograph. This one was rather uncharacteristically up a tree and right at eye-level. Furthermore, he cooperated by staying put for several minutes, though he kept a wary eye out on the group of photographers capturing his portrait.
