SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

Lava Cactus

Isabela, Punta Moreno

Lava Cactus
Brachycereus nesioticus

Endemic species

200mm f/4 micro; Velvia 100F

The lava cactus, true to its name, grows exclusively on lava flows and is one of the first plants to colonize a fresh lava flow. This clump was photographed on the hike inland from Punta Moreno. Although capable of growing to a height of two feet, I saw none larger than half that size.
