A panga ride around the tip of Punta Moreno revealed this large
male iguana defending his territory in a scene that could be completely
prehistoric. Indeed, throughout much of the Galápagos,
one is out of sight of the hand of man (if one excuses the panga,
or ones’ gear and companions). The Galápagos are
in a sense out of time, disconnected from the rushed technological
world in which we live, and where the only things that really
matter are the endless rhythms of the wind, the sun, and the sea.
I have spoken elsewhere in this presentation about the sense of
singular connections, and this is another one of them. Being away
from telephones, the Internet, and (for the most part) man’s
tools allowed a real sense of peace and harmony to pervade the
spirit of all those open to that experience. Sadly, not all saw
that, being too wrapped up in their own world and smaller priorities
to see the larger world around them. Sometimes the biggest gift
you can give to yourself is to observe and immerse and do nothing.
