White sand beaches are comparatively rare on the volcanic Galápagos.
This organic beach, the sand made up of billions of crushed shells
and other organic material, is one of the exceptions. We reached
Gardner Bay on our third day out and were good and ready for some
time on the soft sand, which we shared with groups of sea lions,
Hood Mockingbirds (Hood Island is another name for Española
and the Hood Mockingbird lives there and nowhere else), and, on
rocks at the end of the beach, marine iguanas and Sally Lightfoot
Crabs.
