SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

John Ellert Photography

Floreana Landscape

In this characteristic image of the north shore of Floreana, not far from Post Office Bay, one sees the lava coast punctuated by Palo Santo trees which are common over much of the lowlands across the archipelago. The Palo Santo remains leafless and dormant for most of the year, bursting into leaf and bloom when the moist season rains come in December. The fruit of the Palo Santo is an important food source for several of the Darwin Finches as well as land iguanas and the endemic rats. They grow to 12 m (36’).
I do not know the purpose of the orange pyramid.
