SINGULAR CONNECTIONS: THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

John Ellert Photography

Water Walking

This common pelagic bird, smallest of the resident storm petrels, frequently feeds near ships. This one was photographed near fishermen who were cleaning their catch from their fishing boat. The bird’s method of feeding is distinctive as it skims the surface, wings raised and feet extending into the water. They appear to be walking on the surface and are fascinating to watch, though difficult to photograph.
