| I
have photographed this scene numerous times before in varying
locations from Spain, the Galápagos Islands, both U.S.
coasts, and Mexico. Though undeniably a cliché, there
is something universal about a single person standing at water’s
edge gazing out into infinity. What is she thinking, feeling,
pondering? Does she know someone on the boat in the distance?
Does she wish she were on it? Or is it the attraction of the
ocean. What is the draw of the sea? Perhaps its immensity, power,
or symbolic universalism? Maybe we tacitly acknowledge the great
gulf over which our genetic material has crossed since our distant
and unrecognizable antecedents sheltered in the depths of the
seas. |
