Coronado
Castle was built in 1932 on a prominent, isolated hill, the last in a string
of
low hills overlooking the Smoky Hill River Valley in central Kansas. According
to legend
(in part substantiated), the Spanish explorer Coronado visited this area in
the
mid-1500s looking for rumored cities of gold. Possibly, that gold was in
reality, the grasses of the orignial tall-grass prairies.
