For a weekend of shooting in the Cinque Terre area long Italy’s
Ligurian coast I had ended up in a Bed & Breakfast by
the name of Il Tulipano, or The Tulip. I longed for tulips
to juxtapose against the renovated 19th-Century farmhouse,
but there were none, so I had to satisfy with the pansies
that the owner, had planted in large numbers. I will return
some year in May and shall have the opportunity to really
express the vision I have for Il Tulipano. This image was
created with two different lenses. The first three exposures
of the farmhouse itself were done in very rapid succession
hand holding the camera fitted with a 200mm lens. I needed
to build up the tonal values of the farmhouse to equal 1/3
of the total exposure in order for there to be enough definition
in the farmhouse to show through the darker flowers. For the
remaining 6 exposures I replaced the long lens with a wide-angle
zoom (18-35mm f/2.8) and zoomed through six shots as close
as I could get to one of the groups of flowers. The camera
was hand held during this phase as well to avoid, as much
as possible, the strong lines that result from a tripod-mounted
zoom. |
