Words often carry hints and connotations that extend beyond
their literal meaning and I find that thinking beyond those
literal meanings spurs creative interpretation. In this case
I had gone one evening to photograph a large field of sunflowers
not too far from where I live. As I thought about the sunflowers
I disassembled the composite word and started thinking about
how I could recombine the two halves in such a way as to express
the essence of sun flower. The sun itself was cooperating,
or rather, I had chosen the time of day that lends itself
better to sun photography since it was low in the sky. This
is one of several images made that evening in which I included
the sun and the sunflowers in the same image, necessarily
built as a composite image because exposing for the sun would
have blocked up the sunflowers and exposing for the sunflowers
would have entirely burned out the area around the sun. |
