While the coast line occupies a narrow strip within a short (but indeterminate) distance from the shoreline, and the coastal forests thrive in a somewhat wider belt paralleling the coast, landscapes cover vast territory ranging from shoreline to the arid lands in the eastern parts of Washington and Oregon and the mighty mountains of British Columbia and Alaska. In my travels, I have covered nearly all the coast from central Vancouver Island past Oregon's border with California. Likewise, I have photographed a significant portion of the coastal forests from the shore up into the coast ranges. Yet, I have but scratched the surface of the Cascade Mountains of Washington and Oregon as well as Canada's Coast Mountains and have not even set foot east of the Cascades.

So what I offer here is a narrow view of the whole, heavy on images from the westernmost eighty miles inland from the coast. Recognizing this shortcoming, I am already planning further trips into the wildlands east of Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and Eugene. Thus, while there are, as of this writing in the waning days of 2006, no time-certain plans, this presentation forms the start of yet another portfolio, a love song born of one currently bound to the Great Plains, yet whose heart has taken firm root in the land of shores, forests, and mountains.
