Over the past six years, I have photographed about 1,000 miles of the coast from California's border with Mexico up to Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, a distance of some 2,600 miles. This presentation, fittingly, covers about 600 miles of that distance beginning not too far north of the California border. As you follow through the sequence of images, you will be traveling from south to north, starting at Cape Ferrelo and ending at Windfall Harbor, 90 miles southwest from Juneau. I first traveled to this region in 2001 to photograph bears and whales in Southeast Alaska and as you may by now know, while on that trip fell in love with the forests. Still, having gotten the sea into my blood early in my life through two transatlantic crossings on an ocean liner, I never tire of returning to the coast to renew my spirit and recharge my art. While my last few exhibitions and multimedia shows have concentrated on forests, this presentation, and the accompanying gallery exhibition seek to draw you into my very personal vision of the coast. When I started planning this exhibit in the summer of 2006, I initially thought I would include at most one sunset image, for such pictures are much over-used. However, that time of day is my favorite time to be out, and there are too many signature images for late light to eschew them entirely. I hope that I have not presented too many clichés. |
