The Nature Of Light

An exploration of the kinds of light that I as a photographer have to work with. Twenty-four works explore use of chiaroscuro, warm light, cool light, various colors of light, seasonal light, and light at various times of day. While the images span many years of work, the majority of these works I have created in the past two years and many have not been previously printed or published.

Kindly follow this link for an online version of the exhibition.

I had already been shooting seriously for a number of years and by chance met Nancy Rotenberg while photographing in Alaska. The next summer I joined her Oregon coast workshop, intending to learn more about macro photography. That I did, but what came out of the incredible week would change my style in ways that I could not possibly have foreseen. Part of that was due to Nancy's awesome teaching, but other strong influences were through some of the other students in the workshop. I'd like here to pay tribute to Nancy and those of my colleagues who have gone on to do amazing photographic work. I'll let their websites speak for them.

Nancy Rotenberg
Janice Lovelace
Teryl Monson
Dick O'Kell
Guy Peled
Koren Reyes

There may be others from the workshop who have put up sites of which I am unaware, and I'll add any that I hear of to this list.

May 8, 2009

I have just completed work on my newest multi-media show, Jambo Safari!, an account of a trip to Kenya to photograph wildlife and experience the incredible experience of traveling on one of the world's most unique locations.

This summer's trip to Italy is just a month away - I arrive in Florence on June 11. In a presentation about a month ago, someone challenged me to describe how I'd shoot Porte d'Italia differently now than I did in 2005. I took that to heart, and I plan to reshoot the same themes I assigned myself in 2005: natives going about the business of daily living, tourists being tourists, doorways of every variety, and abstract expressionism, all while avoiding standard tourist and guide-book shots. I have a week in Florence to do that before embarking upon side trips to Cinque Terre (also visited in 2005), Venice (where I have not been since 1976) and Assisi (a location new to me). If you will be in Florence between June 12 and 19 or June 25-26, drop me a line and we'll get together for pasta e vino or go photographing together.
